Today during World Oral Health Day the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) joined dental professionals from all over the globe in raising awareness of the impact that oral health has on overall well-being. Initiatives such as community water fluoridation are crucial to preventing common dental health issues.

“According to the World Dental Federation, 90% of the world’s population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime. Many of these diseases can be avoided by improving access to dental health care and education,” stated Dr. William Nash, President of the Connecticut State Dental Association. “World Oral Health Day gives our members the chance to raise awareness of all the ways to maintain a healthy mouth including the positive impact community water fluoridation has on preventing common oral diseases, such as dental carries.”

World Oral Health Day strives to raise awareness of how oral hygiene effects overall physical health. The theme this year will be “It all starts here. Healthy mouth. Healthy body.” World Oral Health Day offers the global dental profession a chance to take action in a worldwide effort to reduce tooth decay and organize programming and events under a single, unifying message.

The CSDA continues to educate members of the public and legislators on the benefits of fluoride in public water supplies. A natural cavity fighter, fluoride helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay is detected. Research shows that fluoride helps prevent cavities in children and adults by making teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause cavities. Brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste, or using other fluoride dental products, can prevent cavities and strengthen tooth enamel.
